The Boler Masters of Science in Accountancy Provides Top Training in Accounting
The Department of Accountancy at John Carroll University has a long tradition of placing students in leading positions in accounting firms and industry. In order to meet its mission, the department offers two professional options: the MBA with a concentration in accountancy, and the MS in Accountancy (M.S. Accy).
The M.S. Accy is offered to students with a variety of backgrounds that come to John Carroll with a desire to complete a concentrated plan of study as preparation for a career in accountancy. The most significant difference between the M.S. Accy and MBA with a concentration in accountancy is that the MBA requires three courses (nine credit hours) in accountancy, and the M.S. Accy requires five courses (15 hours) in graduate-level accountancy.
Students interested in pursuing the M.S. Accy
will follow one of three course-sequence paths
depending on their undergraduate degree: (1)
non-business, (2) non-accounting business,
or (3) accounting.
Non-Business Background Students
The candidate with a non business undergraduate degree will normally need to complete 28 courses or 84 hours of business and accounting study: 48 hours taken at the undergraduate level and 36 hours taken at the graduate level. Several of the business preparatory courses may be waived for students with a business minor or concentration.
Non-Accounting Business Background
Students
The candidate with a business undergraduate degree that is not in accounting will normally need to complete 18 courses or 54 hours of business study: 21 hours taken at the undergraduate level and 33 hours taken at the graduate level. Several of the business preparatory courses may be waived for the student that has taken courses such as intermediate accounting, income taxation and/or business law. Additional preparatory coursework may be required if there is insufficient business or accounting coursework in the student's background.
Accounting Background Students
Students who have an undergraduate degree in accounting may complete the program in as few as ten courses or 30 hours.
